About Asana

‘Asana’ translates as ‘comfortable seat’, so my intention when teaching asana is to help us find our comfort within each pose so that we may rest there with steadiness.

I have been influenced by a wide variety of yoga styles and teachers ranging all the way from Ashtanga Vinyasa to Vanda Scarevelli.  My teaching is constantly evolving and it is also primarily influenced by the needs of those in front of me. You could say that I have developed my own unique flavour of ‘masala’ yoga!  It is flowing yet precise and dynamic yet allowing.   However I still define the yoga I teach as Hatha Yoga since my aim is to unite the polarities to bring purification and increased vital energy.  As the body and the energy channels within the body purify,  blockages are released allowing for increased energy flow and greater vigour.

Always primary in my asana class is a constant connection to the breath to calm the body and nervous system and to connect with the spiritual dimension.  I encourage awareness of grounding to maintain a body that is stable and free and a mind that is calm and equanimous. 

Asana is a wonderful tool for coaxing out the meditation mind into our daily life since, in asana, we apply focus and equanimity whilst moving and not just in sitting still.

Most important is the inner state we cultivate when practising;  I have no interest in imposing or achieving shapes with the body, rather my interest is in finding a way to be inside our body that is peaceful and connected.    This ultimately leads us to a greater mindfulness in our daily lives and the ability to be present with the here and now no matter how challenging.  When we are present with what is, then we feel and process emotions as they arise so they have no chance to get stuck unresolved within us.
